the book

What Breakthrough Advertising is

Breakthrough Advertising was written by Eugene Schwartz and first published in 1966. It is a book about how copy meets demand that already exists.

Schwartz’s central claim is that a copywriter does not create desire. The desire is already in the market, and the job is to channel it toward your product. The rest of the book is about how to do that for different readers and in different markets.

model one

The five stages of awareness

Awareness is how much the reader already knows. Start your copy at the stage your reader is at.

StageThe readerWhat to lead with
UnawareDoes not know there is a problemA story or idea the reader recognizes in their own life
Problem awareFeels the problem, not the fixName the problem, then show that a fix exists
Solution awareKnows fixes exist, not yoursWhat your approach does and why it works
Product awareKnows your product, is not sureWhy yours is the better choice, with proof
Most awareWants it, needs a reason nowThe offer, the price and the next step

There is a longer treatment with real ads in Eugene Schwartz’s 5 stages of awareness, applied to real ads.

model two

The five stages of market sophistication

Sophistication is how many similar claims the market has already heard. The more it has heard, the harder a simple claim works.

StageWhat is going onWhat works
1First to marketState the claim simply.
2Competitors copy the claimEnlarge it: faster, bigger, more.
3Claims pile up and lose forceIntroduce a mechanism: how it works.
4Mechanisms get copiedEnlarge or refine the mechanism.
5The market is tired and skepticalSell identification: the buyer sees themselves in the offer.

Stage three is where a unique mechanism earns its place.

using it

How to use the two models together

  1. Find the desire. Read what buyers say in reviews, emails and chats, and use their words.
  2. Place your reader on the awareness ladder, and open at that stage.
  3. Read your competitors’ claims to find the sophistication stage, and choose the claim, mechanism or identification that fits.
  4. Test the opening against another stage and keep the result.

the limits

Where the book is hard going

  • It is dense, and its examples come from the 1960s.
  • The five-stage models are tools for thinking, so a reader may sit between stages.
  • Sophistication depends on your market, so check it against your own competitors.

Common questions

Who wrote Breakthrough Advertising?

Eugene Schwartz, a direct response copywriter. The book was first published in 1966.

What is Breakthrough Advertising about?

How copy meets demand that already exists. Schwartz argued that copy channels a desire the market already has, and he gave two models: five stages of awareness and five stages of market sophistication.

What are the five stages of awareness?

From least to most aware: unaware, problem aware, solution aware, product aware and most aware. Each calls for a different opening.

What are the five stages of market sophistication?

How many similar claims the market has already heard. Stage one is a simple claim, stage two enlarges it, stage three adds a mechanism, stage four enlarges the mechanism, and stage five sells identification with the buyer.

Is Breakthrough Advertising worth reading?

For serious copywriters, yes. It is dense and its examples are dated, so many readers start with a summary of the two models and then take the book in sections.

Where does Ink & Signal cover Schwartz?

He is one of the eight masters, with the line channel desire and match awareness, and principle no. 7 reads: match the message to awareness.
